“It is a very exciting time to be a painter, sitting on the threshold of a new millennium offers a broad perspective of our past, and it lets us see from a unique vantage point. It is a time for re-examination and reflection.  We are also perched on the edge of this great new exciting century where the unknown rattles and challenges our past, where new materials and technologies are giving painters immeasurable possibilities for human self expression.” – Maura H. Kenny,   2006

1.  “Earthbound” (22"x30") is a  watercolor / prismacolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. It depicts the fragility of life. The contrast of the healthy babies being born and the images of the starving children depict the fragile state of human existence and human circumstance. The ‘earth mother’ is at the center of this vortex of human life reminding us of our kinship to each other. We are bound to each other by our humanity, a global family. The concept for this painting was inspired by images of starving people in Africa. This painting won the 2002 South Carolina Watercolor Society Annual Competition.

2.  “Food for Thought” (22"x30") is a watercolor / prismacolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. It depicts the contrast of deprivation and wealth provided by life’s circumstances. The ribs of the starving child fuse with the stripes of the young boys t shirt showing similar elements in contrasting form.

3.  “Portrait of a WWII Vet” (22"x30") is a watercolor / prismacolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper.  This dual portrait, frontal and profile view depict the image of  one old soldier. Inspired by my father, a marine in WWII and his stories and memories.

4.  “Annunciation” (22"x30") is a watercolor/ prismacolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. A modern day interpretation of this biblical event. The angel/spirit announcing this unprecedented event is in the form of a woman. This painting was inspired by the observation of women helping other women.  This painting won Best of Show at the 2002 Harbor Walk Exhibition, Georgetown, SC.

5.  “Gift” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. This young girl is a gift to her family as the kitten is a gift to her.

6.  “When you Wish Upon a Star…” (22"x30") is a watercolor / appliqué on Arches 140lb watercolor paper.  This painting is about human potential. The happily expressive faces of the little girls and the clinging developing embryos on the holly -hock symbolize the power of human potential when it is nurtured and supported. Two little dancers who were about to perform in their first dance recital inspired this painting. Their faces were radiant with excitement and boundless with human potential.

7.  “Flower Girl- Emily at 4” (18"x18") is a watercolor portrait of a young girl done on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. Innocence and openness were seen in her face.

8.  “Kaomi’s Dress” (16"x20") is an oil painting on canvas. This little girl modeled for me for several portrait sessions. With her earnings she purchased her own Easter dress and wore it so proudly.

9.  “Night Swim” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. The three figures are treading water in a night- time scene illuminated from the lights of the pool below. While two figures seem amused by their transfiguration, the third seems aloof and perhaps unaware of the amphibian-like transformation. This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

10.  “Breathing Space” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting/appliqué with beads on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. Humorous in nature, we see one little boy holding his breath as his face distorts with the task. This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

11.  “Princess of Tides” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting/appliqué with beads on Arches 140 lb watercolor paper. Imagination is a central theme in this painting. While comfortably at play in low tide, the child is secure to imagine the possibility of commandeering the sea’s tides. Children in northern climates make ‘snow angels, coastal dwelling children make ‘water angels’. This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

12.  “Storm Warning” (32"x44") is a watercolor/appliqué with beads on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. This painting depicts the storm waters of a hurricane but is really symbolic of an inner storm. The bride or guardian figure is ‘raising up’ the spirit of the drowned victim and calming the waters for the family left behind. The reality of life is that people die. I believe ancestors and love ones who have passed on have an uncanny presence and role in our earthly lives. Although this painting is not in the Water Play series the powerful element of water is used as a symbolic life force.

13.  “In Too Deep” (22"x30") is an oil on canvas. The composition is arranged so that the viewer experiences the underwater space of the swimmers. Light trickles down through the water and plays on the surface of the swimmer in a delightful and ‘other worldly’ way.  This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

14.  “Celtic Aire (22"x30") is a watercolor painting/appliqué with beads on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. This painting was inspired by a collection of hand made dolls of Irish mythical characters. The space behind the Celtic figure is typical western Irish landscape. The myth, music and landscape of Ireland are represented in this work.

15.  “Water Play” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting on Arches 140lb watercolor paper. This painting was inspired by the play of light on the water and figures. The distortions that are created by water are particularly pleasing to me. The water creates faceted distortions on shapes and colors. This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

16.  “Pawley’s Swimmers” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting with beads on Arches 140lb watercolor paper.  Creatures that crawl and swim share our seaside environment.  This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

17.  “In to the Deep” (22"x30") is a watercolor painting on Arches 140 lb watercolor paper. This painting was inspired by the play of light on the water and figures. The distortions that are created by water are particularly pleasing to me. The water creates faceted distortions on shapes and colors. This painting is one in a series of Water Play paintings.

18.  “Catherine” (36"x48") is an oil on canvas. This painting is a portrait of an old friend who was born in the Ukraine and had a remarkable story about her immigration to the USA as a young adult. She shared her life story with me little by little over a sherry. When she came to visit me one hot summer day in her red muumuu and umbrella I took her picture. This is the result of that visit and photo.

20.  “Raising Caine (20"x30") is a mono-print. A painting done on plexi glass and then transferred through the use of an etching press to a fine art paper. Raising a son is the theme of this work.
